Upcycle DIY: Hair Clip Revamp

Hey Belle Hey-

We are back with another upcycle DIY using something you probably have laying around…hair clips!

I stumbled upon this great YouTube Channel Bethadilly who makes these amazing videos using Cricut projects. In one of her videos she showed how to make faux leather snap clips and I was hooked for three reasons:

  1. I wear these almost every day

  2. I wear them but you see that tiny hold at the opening- my hair constantly gets stuck and I have lost so many strands of hair

  3. I had been scared to work with faux leather ever since I attempted when I first got my Cricut two years ago and this year I was excited to tackle my goal of working with leather!

For this project you will need the following:

  1. A Cricut Air 2 or Maker

  2. Cricut Deep Cutting Blade

  3. Cricut Strong Grip Mat

  4. Faux Leather (I purchased mine from Craftyrific o Etsy

  5. A Hot Glue Gun- I am using the Surebonder Lynn Lilly Glue Gun and fabric glue sticks

After gathering your materials you simply need to create a rectangle shape to cover your clip in design space and use the faux leather setting along with the Deep Cutting Blade to cut your design out.

Belle Tip: Flip your pattern side of your faux leather onto the mat to make it easier to cut.

Once you have your rectangle cut out you can clean the frayed edges using a simple knife blade. Next, you want to align the leather with the clip. To do this, open the clip with the back towards you and insert the leather with the design showing. Close the clip and then wrap the leather around the top of the clip make sure the leather will meet where you want it to end on the back.

Belle Tip: Make sure you leave some space at the top of the clip to make it easier to connect the two sides.

Once you are satisfied with your placement, use the hot glue to secure the leather onto the bow. I did go back later and add extra glue to make sure the edges closed.

And just like that- you have upcycled hair clips that won’t damage your hair.
